The Veterans Affairs hospital in Gainesville paid and settled more wrongful death cases than almost any other medical center in Florida.

The Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville paid more than $5 million in wrongful death settlements in the decade following September 11. The Lake City medical center, operating in the same health system, paid only $513,000 for wrongful death lawsuits during the same time period.

A doctor or nurse’s “failure to diagnose” was cited in seven of Gainesville’s 16 wrongful death cases. Other patients reported delays in treatment and medication and surgical errors.

Why Is This Hospital Facing So Many Lawsuits?

High volume may account for the hospital’s high numbers. The North Florida/South Georgia VA system is the largest in the country, and Gainesville’s VA hospital is their busiest provider.

The Gainesville facility also has cardiac and neurosurgery units, which offer high-risk procedures not available at all VA hospitals. These and other factors may throw off the hospital’s rating, but they still show areas where the facility can improve procedure and protect patients.
