North Florida VA Hospitals Implicated in Medical Malpractice

A previous blog focused on the nationwide fallout from the Veterans Health Administration scandal of 2014. Now, we turn our focus to North Florida VA hospitals and the accusations that there have been incidents of medical malpractice, as reported by The St. Augustine Record.

A North Florida physician dismissed the notion that a lack of money or doctors was the cause of problems at area Veterans Administration hospitals. Instead, the physician described the style of management at the North Florida VA hospitals as an “‘insanely wasteful’ one that breeds laziness, funnels patients to outside private practice physicians and allows most VA doctors to do the bare minimum every day. The bottom line is that the system breeds mediocrity.”

As frightening as the physician’s statements were, they are even more worrisome when you consider the likely possibility of medical malpractice occurring in such an atmosphere. The physician went on to state, “So I go into the system and I’m kind of like, wow, I don’t have to do this. I don’t have to do that. And I feel bad for saying this, but it’s like the system rewards you for being lazy.”

The doctor trained and worked at differing VA facilities in North Florida for over ten years. He felt that the VA has more than enough funding to implement the needed changes, and stated that the loss in productivity has far-reaching consequences, well beyond a short day for a physician.

As you can see, the atmosphere at the North Florida VA hospitals is just the type of environment where a patient could be negligently injured by a physician. And further, with the number of wrongful deaths attributed to the VA system nationally, we know that this is a reality.
