Continued from Homepage, Verdicts Vs. Settlements

The difference between a "verdict" and "settlement" varies not only by definition, but potentially in the total recovery on your behalf.  While most firms try to settle your case quickly, there may be a greater benefit to litigate your case and take it to trial to get a verdict.  While this process can take more time, it may have a better result if you or someone you know has been seriously injured.

According to Black's Law Dictionary, in law, a verdict is the formal finding of fact made by a jury on matters or questions submitted to the jury by a judge.  Favorable verdicts typically have higher awards to the plaintiff (the person bringing the lawsuit), but also may take a few years to reach.

A settlement is reached when two parties agree on ending a dispute.  Settlements are often used to avoid the time and expense of the courts, trial and litigation.  Settlements have a quicker turn around time, and you as a plaintiff may be able to have your award within months versus over years should the case go to trial.  BE AWARE, in a complex matter, possibly involving brain damage or cerebral palsy, it is the plaintiff who may not get a fair award if a settlement is chosen too soon.  This is why it is important to YOU to be sure and hire a law firm that has experience in trial, and is not afraid to go to trial on your behalf.
