Brain injuries can occur due to blunt force trauma, falls, car accidents, exposure to chemicals and oxygen deprivation. In some cases, these accidents are caused by the negligence of another party. Depending on the severity of the injury, permanent disabilities and millions of dollars in future medical bills could be incurred. A recent example that occurred in Florida can give insight into how brain injuries are financially and physically costly.

A Hillsborough County student athlete who sustained a brain injury during football practice settled with his high school for $2 million. The student was injured by a metal piece of equipment that had been left on the field. School officials did not take the situation seriously, and left the student by himself in an empty room. Upon realizing the extent of his injury, the young athlete and his family went to the nearest hospital where he was diagnosed with a severe brain injury.

Two brain surgeries and nine days later, the teenager woke up from his coma. Although the young athlete has undergone cognitive and physical therapy, he will never have the same quality of life he once enjoyed.

The Financial and Physical Effects of Brain Injuries Can Be Permanent

The $2 million secured by the teenager and his family will help pay for continuing rehabilitation and medical costs, in addition to lost income and emotional suffering. Severe brain injuries can cause problems with memory, speaking and walking. Without these funds, medical bills could have bankrupted the family and the teenager may have suffered an even lower quality of life.

In this case, the school left a severely injured teenager unattended instead of providing immediate medical attention. The school also left a dangerous piece of equipment on a field where athletes were having a football practice. Taken together, the potentially negligent actions of this school caused significant financial and physical damage to the life of an innocent high school athlete.
